Summer Break, Dysregulation & Staying Zen

Is it really here?!

Yes, Summer Break is here! Kids are OUT OF SCHOOL for the next 9-10 weeks in the USA… and up to 3 and half months in other parts of the world. Some moms are already reporting in sessions huge episodes of dysregulation, panic and chaos in the home.

Let’s address the DYSREGULATION first:

  • It is normal and to be expected
  • Kids will throw more tantrums than usual and will “regress” to behaving toddler-like in the first 1-2 weeks of summer break
  • Kids do NOT handle well routines and schedules being interrupted, hence their offtrack behaviors
  • Children feel threatened when predictability is gone, in all circumstances of life, not just summer breaks
  • Travelling(s) and big family events will dysregulate children to the MAX! Do not blame, shame or punish children for “not behaving like a big boy/ big girl.” This is a sign of psychological health on a child’s behalf. Take turns with the other parent, or another loving adult, to do Staylistening abundantly.

How can you stay ZEN during the summer break?

  • Do what I’ve taught you all along: Staylistening, Playlistening, Special Time, Limit Setting and your own self- care (keep up with our  sessions, watch my videos, sleep 7-8 hours per night, eat well, rest, breathe, ask for help). This is not the time to be “the perfect mom”.
  • Have a minimum schedule that a child can anchor his day in  ( this can be more flexible and open than a school schedule). At the bare minimum, lunch & dinner, bedtime and Special Time can be anchored in a child’s day. Bedtime routines are of utmost importance to become deeply connecting times such as reading together, playing, being silly, not rushing the process. Same goes for the first 10-15  minutes in the morning.
  • Do not overschedule your child with activities. LESS IS MORE. You and your child absolutely need ample unplanned time during these weeks. Yes, DOING NOTHING time! (“dolce far niente”)
  • Sleep is more important than academics, camps, programs, sports, etc. for both you and your child.
  • Ask for help. Take time out, regularly.
  • Keep up with your therapy/ coaching sessions.
  • Take in lots of sunlight daily.
  • Lift weights.
