Limits and Limitations in Personal Development

As the week came to an end, I’ve noticed a theme this week in sessions, that of limits and limitations

Here are my takeaways:

ABOUT LIMITS:

  • Everyone around you needs limits from you: your child, your partner, your therapist, your own parents, your best friend; EVERYONE.
  • The more afraid you are to set limits, the more hurt, exhausted, resentful, and angry you’ll grow.
  • People will “take” from you as much as you can tolerate. It is not their fault or responsibility to “protect” your resources (internal and external).
  • You have to be willing to walk away from people (except your children!) who don’t honour your limits/ boundaries.

ABOUT LIMITATIONS:

  • Limitations are 99% internal; they are your core beliefs, your cultural conditioning; your early childhood; everything left un-healed and un-integrated. Most limited people are those who claim “I don’t need therapy.”
  • Limitations are disguised in excellent justifications. The mind is a sublime “liar” (will tell you anything you want to hear to make you “right”). Develop your Observer muscle. Pay attention to the voices in your head. Get help from a coach or a therapist to understand them.
  • Limitations aren’t fixed; they can be fluid and expanded thanks to neuroplasticity and self- awareness work.
