On a recent trip to the Pacific Coast of California, I realized that parenting is a lot like being a lifeguard:
✅ watchful but not intruding;
✅ prepared but not arrogant ;
✅friendly but able to impose safeguarding rules ;
✅very fit : mentally , psychologically, and physically;
✅able to ask for help when in crisis ;
✅ flexible and curious ( versus rigid or chaotic );
✅grateful to be in service of those who need protection.
Currently, parents have the hardest job in the world, mainly because the single – family – unit is an absolute failure as a model for human development. For millennia, humans lived and raised their children in small communities, hunter-gatherers, in harmony with each other, plants, animals and nature at large.
No mom or dad was ever alone in raising their young. The burden is too heavy; the risks are too high.
My message today is very clear: build your tribe. Ask for help. Get support. If you think you’re doing a “good job “ while alone, you’re not. It’s simply not possible.
